If you’ve ever been interested in a career in tech, now’s the time to make a move. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in computer science and information technology are growing much faster than the average of all other occupations between 2018 and 2028. The Rocket Companies® is among the many companies constantly looking to add new tech talent to our team.
Obsessed With Finding A Better Way
Rocket Mortgage® has been recognized as one of Computerworld’s 100 Best Places to Work in IT the past 14 years, ranking #1 for six straight years (2013-2018).
Part of what makes awards like these possible is the mindset of constant improvement at Rocket Companies®. Innovation is ingrained into who we are and everything we do. We even have a week called Hack Week that occurs at the end of every 8-week period. During Hack Week, team members focus solely on innovation and creating cutting edge technology to improve the company and the fintech industry as a whole. We’re constantly seeking out new ways to provide better services and better products to every client and team member alike. It’s from this mindset that programs like Technology University are born.
Course Offerings
Available to all Rocket Companies® team members, the Rocket Mortgage® Technology University, or TechU for short, is a comprehensive learning platform for all things tech. Some popular classes include:
- Intro to Git and GitHub
- Project Management Basics
- Intro to Data Integration
- Object-Oriented Programming
There’s also a program within TechU called Dev.Build(). Dev.Build() was created when the Rocket Companies® realized the need to take on at least 100 software engineers by the end of 2020. We looked internally first and found there were members throughout the Rocket Companies® with a passion for software engineering. But many didn’t have all the skills necessary to practice it yet. Those with an interest in coding can now apply to the extensive 19-week training program Dev.Build() and come out of the program as fully trained full-stack developers. Team members are always encouraged to seek their passion and find new ways to innovate within.
Brains Behind The Trainings
So, who teaches TechU courses? Most TechU courses are taught in-house by our expert learning consultants, but we often team up with leading training groups from all over the U.S., including our own Detroit-based Grand Circus. And not all courses in TechU are focused on coding. Other areas of the business benefit from TechU content, too. The program offers courses in business analytics, project management and more.
Russ Thomas, a team leader in Learning and Development, says there are two main goals of TechU. One is to upskill existing team members so they can be prepared to do the next best thing. The other is to train new team members joining the Rocket Companies® so they’re set up for success and can approach their new role with a solid foundation of knowledge.
“You’re encouraged to speak up and to participate and to spark growth and change,” says Thomas. “I like the ability to be able to make an impact on the business, to be able to help people grow and improve and to help people in their careers. Once I joined the TechU team, I realized that our ability to influence team members’ career paths is significant, and the transition to leadership has provided even more clarity in that sense.”
Bottom Line
Technology is the backbone of any business, and TechU is just one example of the many resources we offer to team members to keep that backbone strong.
Most of the TechU courses can be accessed by any team member in the Rocket Companies®. While we place emphasis on developing our current team members, we’re always looking to add to our ever-growing team.
