Students only have so many summers until graduation, and choosing where to intern is a tough decision. Your internships influence your network and the skills that will help you land a role after graduation.
Which is why I interned with Rocket Companies to learn as much as I could from the talented team members across the company. In celebration of National Interns Day this July, here are some of the best moments from my internship this summer.
Connections Through 1:1 Meetings
In most companies, they’ll tell you to reach out to full-time team members should you need anything. But Rocket Companies truly means it. I sent messages to team members all over the Marketing team to learn more about their projects and daily work, receiving positive responses and opportunities to meet with everyone I spoke with.
When I worked on projects that required experience outside of my skillset, I could talk to full-time team members who helped with the assignments and taught me the skills I needed to succeed in the future.
If I met team members who were working in parts of the company I was curious about, there were even opportunities to help them and learn more about positions outside my role. Which is how I ended up writing this blog, after connecting with Kelsea Wilhelm who runs the Rocket Careers blog and social media pages.
Networking Outside Of Rocket Companies
Summer internships don’t just provide opportunities for you to network within Rocket Companies. There are various events throughout the summer that provide chances to meet with experts in your field across various companies.
One of my favorites was a series of Media Mixers, where companies like Disney, Paramount and Meta visited to teach us more about marketing. After the presentations, we got to chat with them and ask any questions we had. This was a great learning experience for marketing interns, tailored to our field.
This was just an event for marketing interns, and it goes to show that you’ll have opportunities suited to your role to grow your network and your skills. If there’s something you’re interested in that doesn’t necessarily fit into the scope of your role, you can always reach out and find ways to get involved.
Experiences With Other Interns
While learning from full-time team members across the company is a fantastic experience, they’re not the only people who will teach you something new. There are so many interns across the company, and you can always learn from the people around you.
If you’re an intern during the summer, you’ll participate in a summer intern project. This can vary by department, but most likely you’ll end up sorted into a team with other interns. For my summer project, I’m on a three-person team, with two interns who are also in marketing, but have different roles than me.
It’s great to work with other interns and see the way we can combine our skills from experiences in school, as well as the opportunities we’ve had since joining the company. You can learn a lot, and I’m excited to share what we’ve developed in our presentation at the end of the summer.
Learning Opportunities
Besides meeting with team members directly, there have also been presentations throughout the summer where teams talked about the work they’re doing for the company. This could be anything from SEO (search engine optimization) discussions to conversations with the DEI (diversity equity inclusion) team.
There are plenty of planned learning opportunities throughout the summer, where team members present on their specialties and interns can ask questions to learn more. I really enjoyed these, it’s fun to learn about teams you may not be familiar with and learn about the career paths of full-time team members.
