Within Rocket Companies®, there are many different roles. Some of those roles include connecting students with available opportunities at the company. We sat down with Alyssa Boucher, a Senior University Relations Manager, to ask her some questions about her role and gain some advice for those looking to begin their career at Rocket Companies.

Here’s what Alyssa had to say.

What do you do in your role as a Senior University Relations Manager?

As a Senior University Relations Manager, I assist students in letting them know about the job opportunities available to them based on their skill set and identify the skills for them to work on in order to achieve their dream position.

What are the top 3 pieces of advice you give to students as they begin their career journey or job search?

  1. We hear, “I’m open to anything” all the time, so my advice is to be more specific. I’m open to anything that gets me on the phone, allows me to code, helps me improve my Excel skills, etc. This will help you stick out from other candidates as well as help the recruiter place you in a role that will benefit your development.
  2. Tailor your resume to the job opportunity. Job requirements contain technologies or skills that they are looking for so make sure your projects or work showcased on the resume contain those skill sets.
  3. Write things down. We get so excited and nervous for interviews that we may not remember everything we want to discuss. Write down your questions and the answers that you receive from the leaders or recruiters. This will help you remember key aspects of the company, role and team.

Tell us about your career journey to Rocket Companies.

I started as an Associate Recruiter in November 2016 and fell in love with working on technology internship openings. After a year in this role, I moved into a Campus Recruiter position to fill those same technology internship positions.

After a few short months in this position, I realized I wanted to work with candidates before their interview to assist them in being better prepared for the recruiting process so I moved into a University Relations Manager role. I have spent the last 3 1/2 years growing within this position, with a promotion to Senior University Relations Manager in summer 2020.

What do you love about your job?

I love that I get to be part of a student’s journey into finding their career. It’s a role very similar to career services on campus, however, I get to help a student navigate opportunities on behalf of a company so they can see in real time the type of work that is available to them after education.

What schools do you work with?

In Canada, I work with University of Waterloo, University of Windsor, University of Toronto, University of Guelph and St. Clair College.

In the United States, I work with Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan Technological University and University of Notre Dame.

How does Rocket Companies empower you to make a difference as a team member?

Rocket Companies is a feedback-driven organization so as a team member in recruiting, I’m encouraged to give feedback to all of my candidates to help them grow. You don’t have to be a team member for me to help you. I get to be a resource for anyone who needs assistance in their job search.

In your opinion, what do you think is the most valuable benefit or perk offered to interns and team members at Rocket Companies?

The two benefits that I am most thankful for as a team member are our paid time off and free tuition perks. Starting with 4 weeks of paid time off and having the ability to roll it over helps create a great work-life balance and allows the freedom to have a random day off or take an 8-day hiking trip in Italy and Switzerland like I did in August 2019.

I am currently using our free tuition to pursue a master’s degree in organizational leadership while working full time and the only cost to me are books.
