It’s the night before your interview and you’re doing some last-minute prep to make sure you’re ready. You’re wondering what questions you’ll be asked and how you should answer them to stand out from the other applicants. Keep reading to learn tips and tricks from our team to help you maneuver through the interview process.

Knowing The Culture

The first thing you’ll want to think about is the culture of the company that you’re interviewing with. Are they a tech startup with a laid-back culture or a corporate law office with a more structured culture? Understanding their culture will help you speak in a way that’s meaningful to them and can show that you’re a good fit for their company.

Q1: Tell Me About Yourself

Usually, one of the first questions in an interview is, “Tell me about yourself.” which can feel intimidating. To try to sum up everything about you in one answer is a lot. Instead, focus your answer on aspects of your life and work experience that will help you in the role that you’re interviewing for.

For example, if you’re applying for a role in sales, talk about your previous work experience in sales. Make sure to make your experience measurable and talk about how you were able to make an impact. Highlight any certifications or awards you’ve earned that will help you stand out. And lastly, make sure to stay professional. Just because they asked about you, doesn’t mean you should tell them your favorite foods or restaurants.

Q2: Why Do You Want To Work Here

This question is a great opportunity to show how you align with a company’s culture and vision. Of course, we all want a job because it helps us to make money and provides us with benefits. But, for this answer, you’ll need to focus on how this specific company can help you move forward in your career.

A great place to begin is to look at their career website. See what aspects of the career align with your goals and share those with the interviewer. Using specific examples of things that their company does will help you stand out (and it’s even better if you speak their “language” when you answer).

Q3: Tell Me About Your Strengths

Everyone loves to talk about what they’re good at, so when you’re asked this question during your interview, take advantage! To best address this question, you’ll want to choose a couple of strengths that would best help you excel in the role you’re interviewing for.

For each strength, highlight how you’ve been able to use it in your past roles and how you’ve continued to grow that strength. You also want to make sure that you tie each of your strengths to the job you’re looking to get and how it would help you in that role.

Q4: Do You Have Any Questions For Me

The answer to this question is critical during any interview. You should always have a list of prepared questions for the interviewer to ask them at the end of the interview. Not only does this show your interest in the role, but it can also show your preparedness for the interview and translate into how you’ll be on the job.

Having a few questions that are directly related to the role you’re interviewing for can help you understand the expectations of the role, the culture of your future team and next steps in the interview process.

Interview Tips

Preparing for these questions will help you feel confident going into your interview. To end your interview, make sure to ask for next steps and thank your interviewer for their time. These small steps could be the difference between getting a job versus that job going to someone else.
